Outdoor IR Thermometer

Outdoor IR Thermometer

The project aim was to redesign an existing IR thermometer for a brand of choice and to build a functional prototype. I created an outdoor IR thermometer for Atomic an Austrian manufacturer for ski equipment. Educational Project at Umeå Institute of Design
Wax Selection.

The Outdoor IR thermometer is a tool intended for professional ski service men and women in race environment as well as for hobby skiers. It allows to take temperature probes directly on the slope and turns the data into suggestions for ideal ski wax selection.

Design process.

The process started with an analysis of the brand and the existing device. Based on that I created my interpretation of an Atomic IR thermometer. The focus in the implementation phase was to create a functional prototype construed for plastic injection moulding.

Design and features.

A rugged and waterproof design combined with a high grip surface ensures handling even in steep and icy slopes. The device can turn the collected temperature data in instant suggestions for the ideal wax setup. A reduced interface shows the colour code of the appropriate wax for the actual temperature.
Data collection.

For advanced use in racing conditions the device helps to gather and save temperature probes of various points on the slope. The data can be evaluated on a tablet or phone.
